Rhubarb: Your Favorite Fruit—and Festival

Thanks for the massive turnout this past weekend for Rhubarb Days. We had a blast putting it on, although your humble SMSA team is still recuperating from the weekend's festivities. The Tacoma News Tribune knows a good party when it sees one. Special thanks to our...

Strong Roots: Rhubarb (and Rhubarb Days)

Admittedly, we have rhubarb, and Rhubarb Days, on our mind. On that note, SMSA's resident historian, Dale Loseth, has produced a comprehensive website detailing all things rhubarb in the Valley. A little fun fact (courtesy of Dale's website): The Sumner area is the...

Support Small Businesses in Sumner, a message from Mayor Hayden:

It's time for some retail therapy, Sumner! This weekend kicks off the holiday shopping season with Hometown Holidays on Saturday. I know, I know: it's not even Thanksgiving yet. But you try to be a small retailer keeping up with the big box stores who had Santa displays while it was still 90 degrees outside.

It's not easy being an independent retailer. The hours are long and you're competing with warehouse deals and 24/7online shopping. Here are some reasons to ditch the bunny slippers and get out to shop Sumner.

1. It's fun. With a festive atmosphere, coffee, other beverages and lunch, it's a memorable, Instagramable experience that's equally fun whether you're by yourself or with a crowd.
2. It supports your friends and neighbors. C'mon we've all seen our favorite store owners after work, picking up milk at Fred Meyer like the rest of us. The money you invest here stays here rather than going to...I don't know where with international chains.
3. We don't track your browsing history. Nothing is more awkward than seeing what your family member bought for you because 900 ads for it pop up no matter where you go online.
4. It's unique. From books to candles to clothing, you can find it all downtown. If you're thinking it's all antiques, you haven't been here in a while, although there still are antiques too. And if you can't find the exact right gift, there's also gift cards to independent spas, boutiques and restaurants.
5. It makes Sumner...Sumner. We've had our Main Street full of stores for over 100 years. But Main Street only stays "alive" with your support.

And, of course, on top of the "everyday" struggles, our stores have had to deal with impacts from utility construction and the fire. We're working with Sumner Main Street Association to get a list for how to support your favorite stores directly impacted by fire, but in the meantime, please shop all of them because they're all part of what makes Sumner special.

Congratulations Top Down Brewing Company! After ending last week with a bang at the Brewallup Beer Festival and winning the People Choice Award, we are starting this week off with a bang as well! We are proud to introduce our brand new Belgian Tripel Ale. Though it comes in at 9.0% and 38 IBU, with flavors of dark cherry, raisin, plum, spicy phenols/hops and aromatic malt, this highly carbonated traditional style Tripel finishes dry and is easy drinking.

Enjoy the Tripel or any other of your favorite beers along side @rjsbbqsmokehouse on Wednesday and @tacos_mirrey on Saturday (both 4-8pm or sellout). Looking forward to having another fantastic week with everyone. Cheers!
